My favourite fruit is banana. I like it as there are many varieties and many dishes which can be made out of it like ice cream, smoothie, milkshake etc. Yummy!!, let’s move deeper into the types of bananas. There are over a 1,000 types of bananas!!.

I have classified the bananas into two parts. They are, common and rare bananas. Firstly, let’s explore the common bananas.

The common bananas are the Cavendish banana, Dacca banana and Elaichi or Yelakki banana.

The Cavendish Bananas

This variety is very common in the market. They are long bananas with yellow skins (peels). The yellow sweet banana is a mutant strain of the cooking banana, discovered in 1836 by Jamaican Jean Francois Poujot, who found one of the banana trees on his plantation was bearing yellow fruit rather than green or red.

The Dacca Banana

This variety isn’t so common, but is found in the market. Red bananas are a subgroup of bananas from Southeast Asia with red skin. They’re soft and have a sweet flavor when ripe. Some people say they taste like a regular banana but with a hint of raspberry sweetness. They’re often used in desserts but pair well with savoury dishes, too..

The Elaichi or Yelakki Banana

This variety of bananas is very cute and tiny. You can finish one whole banana in one gulp!!, it is that tiny!!. The Elaichi or Yelakki bananas are commonly found in Mumbai and even in Bengaluru and are more abundant than the regular ones in these cities.

The Musa Velutina Banana

Musa velutina, the hairy banana, or pink banana, is a species of seeded banana. These plants are originally from Assam and the eastern Himalayas. They are also cultivated in greenhouses and places like Australia. Its fruits are 3 in (8 cm) long, pink, and fuzzy.

The Blue Java Banana

Have you tasted any fruit blue in colour, or is there any fruit blue in colour. The Blue Java banana originated from South East Asia and spread through continents such as Northern Australia, Hawaii, Central America, and Fiji. It is also known as the ice cream banana, Cenizo, and Hawaiian banana.

The Pisang Banana

Bananas, like the Pisang Mas, are native to Southeast Asia and were spread to Africa in the 5th century and the Caribbean in the 16th century via trade routes and exploration. This variety is used to make banana chips. Pisang tanduk has a thick skin that will turn yellow when ripe and is one of the bigger banana varieties.

The Lady Finger Banana

Lady Finger bananas are native to Australia and Southeast Asia. The plants are not actually trees, they are perennial herbs. Leaf stalks grow straight up from the soil and new leaves emerge from the center. Lady Finger bananas have fuchsia flowers that bloom before making way for the fruit.

The Manzano Banana

The Manzano bananas are native to the tropical countries like Central and South America, the Caribbean and Mexico, Melissa’s Manzano Bananas are very popular in Latin American, African and Asian cuisine. are short and chubby with thick yellow skins that turn completely black when ripe. They’re sometimes called the apple banana because of their apple-like flavor when immature.

The Burro Banana

The Burro Banana, from Mexico, is available year-round and has a tangy lemon flavor. Once ripe, the soft flesh is creamy white or yellow with some firmness toward the centre. Used when firm, the Burro banana can be sliced and added to cereals or made into banana chips.

So, I know what banana is called in English, Kannada and Hindi. In Kannada we call it ‘Balle Hannu’, in Hindi ‘Kela’ and in English ‘banana’. So, let’s explore how it’s called in other various languages.
